JD WELSH CUP
Rhayader Town are left to represent Brecon & Radnor in the first round proper of this season’s JD Welsh Cup after a 3-2 victory over Brecon Northcote on Friday night. Captain Michael Fowlie steered the Red Kites through with a hat-trick as they came from two down against a plucky Northcote. Brecon had forged a two goal lead through Jack Evans and Joel Evans but Fowlie struck twice for Rhayader before half-time and completed his hat-trick with a second half penalty following a handball.
It was the end of the road for both Knighton Town and Llandrindod Wells. Knighton went out 2-0 at home against Bow Street who netted through Dean Evans and Tom Wyn Roberts . while Llandrindod were unfortunate to make a 2-1 exit at Carno. The Spa men were the better side for much of the tie and went ahead with Gareth Jones setting up Kieran McCarley. Jones was then adjudged to have fouled Adam Williams at the other end with Andy Evans equalising from the penalty spot, Andy Evans saw Carno through following a corner although Llandrindod twice hit the bar and saw other chances go begging.
Llanidloes Town progressed with a 3-1 home win over Barmouth & Dyffryn with Drew Reynolds setting The Daffs on their way. Reynolds was later sent off for picking up two yellow cards as further goals from Rhys Evans and Steve Jones (pen) completed their passage.
Karl Seliaerts bagged a hat-trick as Berriew romped through with a 7-0 victory at Llansantffraid Village where Dewi Hughes (2), George Davies and Dave Roberts were also on the mark.
Abermule took another Spar first division scalp in coming from behind to beat Borth United 3-2. Daniel Hopton and Klee Jones had put Borth in the driving seat but Tommy Jones pulled one back before half-time and a second half double from Barry Bellis won it for Abermule.
A hat-trick from Ian Probert could not prevent Welshpool Town bowing out 4-3 at home against Aberaeron who nicked the tie through a Mattie Davies hat-trick and a header from Sion Clarke.
Khyam Wyton netted twice as Llanrhaeadr saw off Kerry with a 3-1 win. Dale Evans claimed the other Llanrhaeadr goal with Luke Mumford scoring for Kerry.
SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Newbridge won for the first time this season in the Spar Mid Wales League second division with a superb 4-1 home success over previously unbeaten Dolgellau. The visitors arrived with three straight wins under their belt but Newbridge, under new player-manager, Ieuan Price, took an early lead when Aeron Powell tapped a free-kick to Ollie Woods who fired home. Lyndon Jones, returning from injury, added a second soon after half-time cutting in from the win to score from 25 yards. Powell increased the lead from the penalty spot after being brought down before Dolgellau reduced the arrears with a deflected free-kick from David Edwards. They sensed they could then get something from the game but Newbridge ‘keeper, Fin Duncan McKain twice denied Dominic Thomas before The Villagers completed a good day at the office with Ryan Evans heading a fourth goal from a corner in the closing minutes.
Builth Wells remain unbeaten and chalked an impressive 4-1 home win against Presteigne. Matt Strangwood had given Presteigne the lead but Builth, who handed a debut to former Rhayader Town midfielder, Christian Jones stormed back. There was a little fortune to Builith’s equlaiser when Joel Metcalfe’s corner was returned to him and he swung a ball back in that deceived everyone including ‘keeper, Simon Hamer. When Adie Jones was fouled, Metcalf took the free-kick which led to a headed own goal.to put Builth 2-1 up at the break. Ryan Powell headed in a Metcalf corner early in the second half and Builth secured the spoils when a cameo appearance from manager, Chris Jones, against his former club, set up Josh Price for a fourth goal.
Presteigne had collected three points last Tuesday night with a 3-0 local derby success over Penybont. Two goals from Matt Strangwood put Presteigne in the driving seat but Daniel Paosila-Jones raised Penybont hopes by reducing the deficit on the stroke of half-time. Joel Layton hit the post for Presteigne in the second half before a third goal for the hosts from Josh Gardner sealed the points.
Penybont went on to suffer a further defeat at the weekend going down 5-1 at home to Montgomery Town. The home side conceded three goals inside 20 minutes but Daniel Paosila-Jones pulled one back early in the second half. Two late goals clinched the points for Montgomery whose goalscorers were Jay Anis (2), Sam Davies, Luke Williams and Alec Jones.
Talgarth will be disappointed in losing 2-1 at home to Dyffryn Banw. Scott Powell gave Talgarth the lead but the visitors hit back through Bryn Jones and Aled Davies.
The two games in Division One resulted in wins for Llanfair United and Churchstokw. Ben Jones (2), Toby Evans and Josh Astley contributed to Llanfair’s 4-1 victory over Machynlleth while newly promoted Churchstoke notched an excellent 2-1 win at Tywyn Bryncrug courtesy of Tony Meredith and Joe Haycock.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)
Brecon Northcote Reserves picked up their first point of the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) campaign with a 3-3 draw against visiting Knighton Town Reserves. Knighton had looked on course for the spoils after Sam Hoyle and Billy Hyett handed them a two goal interval lead. Northcote however responded after the break through Adam Tester, Curtis Williams and a long range effort from Luke Bowen only for Hyett to grab his second to leave it all square.
Llanidloes Town Reserves maintained their perfect start with a 2-1 victory at Presteigne Reserves. The home side had the better of the first half chances and deservedly took the lead in the second half through Tom Lewis. The Daffs hit back immediately with Rhys Evans latching on to a Nefyn Savage through ball and Llanidloes won it when a deep cross from Evans was headed home by Ash Harries.
Builth Wells Reserves surrendered their first points of the term in a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle. Dave Thomas maintained his rich vein of form in front of goal by again scoring for Builth but Newcastle were three up at that stage through Jimmy Thomas, Tom Bright and Jack Kennett as the Shropshire men made it three wins in a row.
Hay St Marys Reserves, whose manager, Mark Harding stepped down last week, returned to winning ways with a 5-2 verdict at Felindre. Bertie Jones netted twice for the newcomers but they were outgunned with Ricky Lynes completing a hat-trick and Nathan Heighway scoring twice for The Saints.
Llandrindod Wells Reserves, like Felindre, remain without a point after going down 4-2 at home against St Harmon. Stephen Fuller and Scott Oxford were the Spa marksmen with Paul Savage, Phil Ruell, Josh Rees and Owen Hughes on target for The Swifts.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH) – MIDWEEK
There were a glut of goals in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) last Wednesday night as Builth Wells notched one of the night’s best results with a 7-0 victory at defending League Champions, Hay St Marys Reserves. Dave Thomas notched the top individual feat of the season to date with a five goal haul while George Woods and Josh Price were also on target.
Newcastle were the topscorers with a 10-0 away success at newcomers, Felindre. Carl Price led the way with a hat-trick, Ben Harvey scored twice while Craig Morris, Jimmy Thomas, Jake Morgan, Jack Kennett and a Johnny Rowlands own goal completed the tally.
Llanidloes Town Reserves eased to a 9-1 win against Llandrindod Wells to go top of the early season table. There were hat-tricks for Adam Nottingham and Josh Matthews with David Jarman, Conrad Galloway and Ash Harries the other marksmen. Kieran McCarley replied for the Spa men who could have conceded double figures only Nick Jones saw his superb effort straight from kick off ruled out with some players not in the correct half.
Rhayader Town, yet to concede in the league, were 5-0 winners over Brecon Northcote Reserves. Michael Fowlie handed the Weirglodd side a two goal interval lead and Jamie Evans and brothers, Liam and Ryan Addison netted in the second half.
Presteigne Reserves had bounced back from two defeats to celebrate a 3-1 victory in their local derby at Knighton Town Reserves. Tom Crichton (2) and Duanne Anning saw Presteigne three up at half-time before Joe Barrett pulled one back for Knighton.
