FAW Amateur Trophy: Late penalty seals Radnor Valley victory

There was late drama at The Bypass as Radnor Valley progressed to the second round of the FAW Amateur Trophy with a 3-2 victory over last season’s Pembrokeshire League champions, Hakin United.

There was not much to write about for much of the tie in the way of chances until Joey Price broke the deadlock on 72 minutes, making space in the box to fire the opener after being picked out by Jack Gittoes.

Scott Ferney equalised for Hakin following a cross from the left, but Gittoes looked to have won it for Radnor when he netted with a thumping header from Price’s corner two minutes into stoppage time.

Radnor, who were without five regulars, saw Sam Sainsbury head off the line before Liam Parks grabbed a late second for the visitors with a fine overhead finish past Will Fowden, who was making his first start in almost two years.

It would surely now go to a shoot-out, but Radnor had other ideas and Joey Price won it from the penalty spot for The Goats after 98 minutes when Gittoes was bundled over in the box.

Brecon Corries and Knighton Town are also through, although far more comfortably than Radnor, with Corries, who scored nine in the qualifying round, leading the way as they thumped Cwrt Rawlin 9-1 at home.

Jay Ryan Hughes and Corey Evans put Corries two up in the opening quarter of an hour, and two in as many minutes from Finlay Daniels and Connor Acton later in the half virtually put the tie to bed.

Youngsters Daniels and Acton both struck again after the break, and Liam McAnally extended the lead before Joel Evans netted twice to complete one of the biggest wins of the round.

Knighton Town made one of the longest journeys of the day to Anglesey, but it proved worthwhile as The Radnor Robins eased through with a 7-0 win at CPD Aberffraw.

An ill-disciplined home side picked up eight yellow cards during the tie, two of them leading to a red, but Knighton did not get involved and let their football do the talking.

Jack Davies headed them in front from a Harley Morris corner, and 16-year-old Finley Williams doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time with his first goal for the club from Luke Boundford’s knock-down.

Boundford increased the lead ten minutes into the second half, after which the floodgates opened. Substitutes Louis Scott (2) and Jack Hoyle chipped in before Boundford rounded it off with his second of the tie in stoppage time.

Builth Wells are, however, out of the competition following a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Tongwynlais.

Builth had to reshuffle after losing defender Cameron Mills to injury early on and never really got going, with manager Brad Rollinson admitting The Bulls were not good enough on the day.

They were unable to create any clear-cut chances as Liam Cleaver’s goal on 35 minutes proved enough to settle the outcome.

Jamie Breese and Steffan Rogers each scored twice as Kerry beat CPD Caerwys 4-0, and Gerwyn Williams netted four in Dolgellau’s 6-0 victory over Tywyn Bryncrug in the one all-Mid Wales tie.

Llanfair United defeated Mochdre Sports 6-5 on penalties after their tie finished goalless, while Iwan Matthews (2) and Rob Hughes earned Llanrhaeadr a 3-0 verdict over Hawarden Rangers.

Llanilar, from the MMP Central Wales League (South), produced one of the shocks of the round, beating Llannefydd, who are third in the Ardal League North West, 4-3 on penalties, with Osian Simpson-Jones (2) and Steff Gillies their marksmen in a 3-3 draw.

Josh Jones, Ed Clarke and Rhys Evans contributed to Llanidloes Town’s 3-0 passage over CPD Llanstumdwy, but Ffostrasol are out.

Keane Moore and Dafydd Phillip both netted twice in a 4-4 draw at Splott FC before the West Wales side bowed out on penalties.

Llanfyllin Town are left to fly the flag for the MMP Central Wales League (North) after triumphing on penalties at Rhostyllen, but Berriew were beaten 4-0 at home by Talysarn Celts, while Montgomery Town conceded their tie at Mynydd Isa.
