SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Connor Bird scored a late winner from the penalty spot as Knighton Town triumphed 3-2 at Tywyn Bryncrug to make it four wins from their last five in the Spar Mid Wales League first division.

The Robins had a couple of decent first half chances with Bird and Matt Venables unable to finish when well placed. Mark Jones did give Knighton the lead with a 35 yard screamer early in the second half and within five minutes the lead was doubled with player-manager, Adam Worton netting a free-kick. Knighton then shipped two goals to Nick Williams and Mark Edmondson which was disappointing from their point of view but they grabbed a winner with five minutes remaining. Worton put Mark Jones through and he was taken out by the Tywyn ‘keeper allowing Bird to net from the spot to tak e The Robins into the top six.

Radnor Valley are one place above Knighton as they extended an unbeaten league run to seven with a 1-1 draw against visiting Carno. And it was Joey Price, returning from a lengthy injury lay-off who salvaged a point with a late equaliser after Tom Richards had put Carno ahead. Richards had deservedly given Carno the lead in the second half and they perhaps should have killed off the game but Elliot Morris twice went close for Radnor before combining with Liam Jones to set Price up for he leveller.

Llandrindod Wells made it back to back home wins with Kejan Foreszewski and Ryan Sims securing a vital 2-0 hom e success over Churchstoke. Conditions were difficult on The Broadway but the pitch was passed fit and Llandrindod enjoyed a good first half growing in confidemce as the match progressed. Stuart Williams ws denied from close range and the Churchstoke ‘keeper made other saves before Foeszewski camlmy slotted the opener following a good move down the right. Llandrindod sealed the points on the hour when Gareth Jones headed a free-kick back across goal and Kieran McCarley’s effort was blocked but Ryan Sims smashed home the rebound.

Welshpool Town extended their lead at the top of the table to five points with a 5-2 home success against Aberaeron although second placed Llanrhaeadr do have three games in hand.

Wil Thomas scored twice and Ian probert, Rob Pritchard and Adam Davies also netted as Welspool’s Chris Roberts and Neil Pryce celebrated their manager of the Month awards for October. Mattie Davies scored both Aberaeron goals.

Llanfair United are up to third after a solitary strike from Josh Astley was enough to earn a 1-0 home win against Borth United but they had a player sent off for the second week in succession with Dan Jones seeing red.

The weather had it’s say with the first division games at Kerry and Machynlleth both postponed.

SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 2

Brecon Northcote are finding their feet in the Spar Mid Wales League second division and pulled off a terrific 4-0 home success against Newbridge at the week-end. Joel Evans again led the way with a hat-trick as Northcote moved into the top six. It was Corey Evans who gave Northcote an early lead with a free-kick and two in quick succession from Joel Evans around the half hour mark all but sealed the points. His first was a powerful run and shot and the second a towering header from a Jack Evans corner. Newbridge tried to get back in the game but as they pushed were open to the counter attack and Evans completed his hat-trick when he sprung the off-side trap and rounded the ‘keeper.

At the top of the table, Builth Wells are showing no signs of easing up as they triumphed 2-0 at Dyffryn Banw to maintain their eight point lead. But player-manager, Chris Jones admitted this was Builth’s most difficult league game to date. Jack Hughes hit a post for Builth n a goalless first half and Banw thermselves hit the woodwork midway through the second period. That sparked Builth into action and they immediately took the lead with a defender heading into his own goal under pressure from Lee James. Josh Price wrapped up the spools latching on to a Neil Davies through ball to round the ‘keeper.

Llansantffraid Village look to b Builth’s main rivals for the second division title at the moment and they recorded a 3-0 home win against Presteigne who drew a blank for a fourth game in a row. But Presteigne were a shade unfortunate on Saturday following a goalless first half and saw Matt Strangwodd hit the bar after tehh break when llansantffraid scored through Rob Carruthers (2) and Harry Kerr.

Hay St Marys notched a welcome 4-3 win at bottom of the table Penybont with Jack Biggs grabbing the winner. Penybont struck first but Matty Tong drew The Saints level. Tom Landon edged Hay in front from the penalty spot when Darren Horrigan was bundled over and Hay then saw no more than three efforts ruled out by a linesman’s flag. Penybont equalised but Jamie Howard volleyed Hay back in front before half-time. In the second half an own goal from Jack Biggs once more made it all square but Biggs atoned for that misdemeanour by poaching the winner from close range after Josh Wisniewski had been denied. Sion Hermon scored twice for Penybmt for the secnd week in a row while Daniel Paosila-Jones was their other marksman,

Penybont remain rock bottom while Talgarth Town are now entrenched in the bottom two following a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Aberystwyth University on Sunday. Goals from Kyle Harding and Rob Evans proved not quite enough for Talgarth with Pablo de Tores, Tom Spicer and James Watts giving he visitors the spoils.

The students had picked up a point on Saturday in a crazy 5-5 draw with visiting Montgomery Town. Tristan Harris and Liam Powell each scored twice while Ryan Welch was also on target with Robbie Hartshorn (2), Ryan jehu (2) and Stuart Buckley Robins replying for Mntgomery.

Elsewhere Abermule defeated Dolgellau 3-1 at home with Dave Anthony (2) and Charlie Humphreys on target while Dion Jones netted for Dolgellau.

WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)

Felindre were celebrating long into the night after notching their first win of the season in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South). After nine straight defeats, the village side, which reformed in the summer, ran out 3-2 winners over Brecon Northcote Reserves with goals from Bertie Jones (2) and Jack Barrett.

Curtis Williams gave Northcote the lead midway through the first half but Felindre began to dominate and Jones levelled after being put through by Josh Morgan. The hosts continued to press and Barrett headed home from a Tom Harris cross.

Northcote started the second half on top but a through ball saw Bertie Jones race clear and put Felindre further ahead. Felindre ‘keeper, George Morgan pulled off a number of fine saves to keep Northcote at bay but they reduced the deficit with a screamer from Ronnie Bailey, his first senior goal.

This led to a nervy final few minutes for Felindre but they stood firm with Johnny Rowlands clearing one effort off the line right at the death. There is no change at the top of the table with both Rhayader Town and Llanidloes Town Reserves frustrated as their games were postponed. Rhayader’s fixture at Builth Wells Reserves was off due to a waterlogged pitch while Llanidloes’s home clash with Hay St Marys Reserves was postponed with Hay unable to raise a team. This is the second week in a row with The Saints having conceded their Emrys Morgan Cup tie the previous Saturday.
