AERON Powell was again Newbridge’s shooting star as The Villagers pulled off a 2-1 home win against Four Crosses in the Spar Mid Wales league second division.

The visitors took an early lead and Newbridge ‘keeper, Fin Duncan McKaine made an excellent save to deny Crosses a second. But when Powell struck in quick succession either side of half-time, Newbridge went on to dominate and could well have won by a wider margin.

Newbridge move up a couple of places and are now above Presteigne who went down to a 5-2 defeat at Churchstoke. Josh Gardner scored both goals for Presteigne who were 4-0 down at one stage and undoubtedly would have been on the end of a far bigger defeat if it had not been for goalkeeper, Simon Hamer who produced a string of fine saves.

There was no joy either for Builth Wells who were beaten 4-0 at Llansantffraid Village. Player-manager, Shane Claridge said, "We were second best all day. Llansantffraid played a very effective long ball game up to an excellent striker in Nathan Prodger and they also had two good wingers which we did not handle very well."

Aberystwyth University caused a shock with a 3-0 home win against second division leaders, Borth United. Borth hit the bar and post in the first half but it was not their day as after the break, the students rattled in three quick goals through Shaun Roberts, George Jenkins and henry Nicholson.
