Llandrindod and Builth could once again not be separated in last weekend’s league meeting, and it was a weekend to forget for Brecon Corries and Talgarth Town, who both suffered heavy losses.
Honours were even again as Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells played out a 1-1 draw in the Ardal League North East.
Three times the local rivals have now met this season and they just cannot be separated. Llandrindod had won on penalties in the Amateur Trophy the previous week and they went in front on Saturday with Ashley Jones heading in from a Jack Evans corner. Llandrindod possibly deserved that first half lead but Builth edged the second period with substitute, Jamie Evans showing up well for The Bulls. And Builth were back on terms with almost an hour played with captain, Chris Roff heading home a Lyndon Jones corner. Both sides had chances to have won the game after that but a draw was undoubtedly a fair result.
Llanfair United, who have appointed Paul Inns as assistant manager following his departure from Berriew, maintained their one hundred per cent record with a 6-2 win against local rivals, Welshpool Town. Max McLaughlin bagged a hat-trick and Richard Davies (2) and Tom Gregory got the other Llanfair goals with Ethan Kinsey scoring twice for Welshpool.
Cefn Albion defeated Rhos Aelwyd 3-0 in the top of the table clash with goals from Alex Williams, Chris Budrys and Jordan Williams while Dolgellau are up to fourth with David Edwards, Rob Evans and Gerwyn Williams contributing to a 3-2 verdict over Llanrhaeadr.
And Corwen beat Llangollen Town 3-2 for their first win of the season - a result which means Rhayader Town, who were without a game on Saturday, slip to the foot of the table.
Brecon Corries had a day to forget as they went down to a 4-0 defeat at fellow newcomers, Blaenavon Blues in the Ardal League South East. Matthew Burns (2) and Michael Baugh, with a free-kick, saw Blaenavon forge a three goal lead and Corries had Nathan Williams sent off three minutes before half-time, his second red card in as many games. And Burns completed his hat-trick in first half stoppage time to complete Corries’ misery.
Hay St Marys returned to winning ways by booking a place in the second round of the MMP Central Wales League Cup with a narrow 3-2 victory over Knighton Town on Friday night.
But Knighton more than played their part in what was a cracking cup-tie under the Forest Road floodlights. Hay looked to have put themselves in the driving seat when defenders, Will Goodwin and Adam Finn scored their first goals of the term in a three minute spell midway through the first half. Jack Davies pulled one back for Knighton before half-time but topscorer, Matty Tong regained Hay’s two goal advantage after the break. But Steve Faux kept the tie very much alive when he got Knighton’s second on 66 minutes.
Radnor Valley, who lifted the trophy last season when it was known as the MMP Mid Wales League Cup, are also through after easing to an 8-0 win over Talgarth Town at The Bypass.
Early goals from Taylor Wozencraft and Geraint Lloyd set the tone for the afternoon and Elliot Morris grabbed a third with a thumping header from Jake Bufton’s corner.
Lloyd headed his second from close range and the former Rhosgoch striker completed his hat-trick before half-time.
Both sides were reduced to ten men with Talgarth captain, Harry Sharman and Radnor player-manager, Morris sent off by referee, Ross Mantle but that made littledifference. Talgarth substitute, Max Lishman was credited with an own goal on the hour under pressure from Wozencraft when Charlie Beaumont crossed and Jack Price and Beaumont added further goals in what was a comfortable afternoon for The Goats.
Penybont’s struggle continued as they crashed out of The Cup, beaten 8-0 at home by Bishops Castle. Sam Jones led the way with four of the Castle goals and Toby Mills (2), George Ellis and Jake Cintra were also on target for the visitors who led 5-0 at half-time.
Michael Whyte scored in stoppage time as Montgomery Town went through 3-2 at Berriew who had led through a Tony Meredith penalty. Jack Williams levelled but Dylan Cook put Berriew ahead for a second time. They then had Ciaran Wheeldon sent off and Andrew Roscow equalised on 86 minutes before Whyte grabbed his late winner.
Tywyn Bryncrug pulled off an impressive 3-0 win at Machynlleth thanks to Laurence Chesworth (2) and Ryan Goddard while Ryan Edwards scored twice as Penparcau saw off Aberystwyth University 4-2 at Park Avenue.
Rob Carruthers scored late in extra-time to earn Llansantffraid a 2-1 win at Kerry, who have been boosted by the return of Luke Mumford from Caersws, while Jake O’Donnell was a hat-trick hero as Forden United also needed extra-time to triumph 5-3 against Meifod. Elsewhere Trewern United defeated Llanfyllin Town 4-2, Four Crosses beat Waterloo Rovers 3-2 and Llanilar swept to a 5-0 success at Aberaeron.
In the one game in the Central Wales League South, Presteigne St Andrews slumped to a 7-0 defeat at Tregaron. The host led 3-0 at half-time through Adrian Hazelby, Ryan Davies and Gethin Jones. Jones, Rhun Garner and Marc Evans netted after the break and Jason Jones completed the tally after Tregaron goalkeeper, Barry Edwards had been sent off.
St Harmon are top of the early season table in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) following a 2-0 win at Presteigne St Andrews Reserves.
The Swifts turned in a solid performance with a goal in each half from Ollie Leadbetter and Adam Watson enough to secure their second league win of the term.
Newcastle opened their league campaign and were indebted to Matthew Jones who snatched a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against visiting Hay St Marys Reserves. Aaran Mills had given The Saints the lead in first half stoppage time but Jones struck for the Shropshire men four minutes from time.
Builth Wells will aim to get their FAW National Reserve League Central title challenge back on track on Friday night when they visit defending league Champions, Llanidloes Town.
Both teams boast one hundred per cent records in the league this time but Builth have not had the best preparation for the big clash having not played for a month.
Llanidloes were in action last Friday night and made it five wins from five with a big 8-2 victory over local rivals, Caersws. There were hat-tricks for Rhys Evans and Will Denham with Mason Jones and an own goal completing the tally while Jared Marks and Joe Cook replied for The bluebirds.
Rhayader Town moved off the bottom with a thrilling 5-4 success over Dolgellau at The Weirglodd – their first win of the season. Sam Crumpton was the Rhayader hero with two late goals while Warren McFadden, Ryan Owen and Sion Herman were also on target with Dominic Thomas, Tom Carr, Brian Thomas and Tom Edwards netting for Dolgellau.
In the weekend’s other game, Welshpool beat Penrhyncoch 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Owain Richards.
