THE racing last weekend was centred around the STAGBI mare’s race which is an all weather free-for-all sponsored by the breed society for future standard-bred broodmares.

The races were straight races with no finals which added interest to the afternoon.

In the Grade A Lakeside Pan stopped the clock in just under two minutes much to the delight to veteran owner John Elder from New Quay driven as usual by son Wayne while Cloudburst (Perfect Longmains) was second and Backmarker Infinatey (Jones Sennybridge) was third.

The second Novice race was run out of sequence with Forest Surprise (Miles Merthyr) and driven by Lynne Boxhall claiming first prize from Hyar Temptation (Thomas Tregroes) with Purple Connection (Williams Llanwern) running a good race in third.

In the nursery race it was a win for the unusually named Ook whose coming with owner Mark Evans from Brecon in the seat, beating Meadowland Olympic (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) and Ladyford John (Duggan Llangunllo).

In the STAGBI broodmare’s race there was a full entry of nine runners and it proved to be one of the most exciting races of the afternoon. Zestthewayilikeit with owner Oliver (OJ) Jones in the seat looked as if they were going to be the victors but the experienced Mel Langford on the junior Elder family’s Rhyds Backchat surged down the home straight to seize victory so giving the training stable at Blaencelyn a third win to celebrate a very special day, while the talented Brywins Jo Jo (Jones Ammanford) was third.

The final race of the day was the open free-for-all. Infinatey (Jones Sennybridge) who is running in his first season with Mid-Wales, was given pole position and with Mathew (Mr Cool) Tromans in the seat it was never going to be easy to catch them.

That proved to be the case as he clocked up the fastest time of the day of 1:56.5 while For One Night Only (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) was not disgraced in second and Lakeside Pan (Elder New Quay) had to be content with third.

The trotting action moves on to the mid-week meeting at Penybont on Wednesday August 3rd followed by the traditional Tregaron meeting on Saturday August 6 both starting at 1.30pm.
