Motorsport fans are set for a high-octane evening next week as the Welsh Open Motocross Championship makes its long-awaited return to Cwmythig Hil near Rhayader.
The event, sponsored by PAR Homes, Bodenham Enterprise Park and Steve Rowlands & Sons, takes place on Wednesday, May 28 at the popular hillside circuit in St Harmon.
A strong national field is confirmed for this edition of the championship. Last year’s winner, Conrad Mewse, is back to defend his title, and he’ll face fierce competition from former GP star Tommy Searle and top Welsh riders Adam Sterry and Joel Rizzi.
Also on the line-up are Taylor Hammal, Dan Thornhill, UK Enduro specialist Jack Edmondson, and Rhayader’s own Alex Walton, who will be aiming to impress on home turf.
To accommodate the growing scale of the event, the Cwmythig Hill track has undergone significant upgrades, mainly to the bottom half of the course, including a new American-style jump along the start straight.
Popular features such as the 125ft uphill triple jump, the downhill ski jump, and the dramatic 65ft finish line tabletop jump remain part of the spectacle.
Practice starts at 5:30pm, with racing from 6:30pm. The 10-race programme ends with a Pro/Expert “dash for cash” Grand Final.
Spectators can enjoy views across the whole circuit, with commentary from top motocross announcers Chris Czora and Leah Yarranton. More than 4,000 fans attended last year.
Facilities include food stalls, a bar, trade stands, permanent toilets, and hard parking. New this year is an accessible viewing area for senior and disabled spectators.
Entry is £10 for adults, with children under 14 admitted free. Tickets are available on the gate and must be paid for in cash. The venue will be signposted from Rhayader.
