Ystradgynlais 26 Neath Athletic 22

YSTRADGYNLAIS returned to winning ways with a lacklustre performance against a committed Neath Athletic side.

The Blues began the game strongly with some exciting and varied play consistently testing the visitors defensive line.

The deadlock was broken when Ystrad full back Owen James ran in to score wide out. Ricky Williams added the extras courtesy of his conversion.

Just minutes later Owen James crossed over again in the opposite corner. Ricky Williams defied Mother Nature by sensationally converting from the touch line.

The first half scoring was completed near the end of the half with a twenty Meyer driving maul securing the first try of the season for number 8 Leighton Llewellyn. Fly half Williams converted from in front of the posts. The home side took a commanding twenty one point lead into the half time break.

The second half brought rain and a drop in temperature, it also brought a very determined Neath Athletic. The Blacks opened the second half scoring to show both the players and crowd that they were still fighting for points.

A twenty minute lull with no score was finally broken with Leighton Llewellyn securing a brace of tries. The conversion was missed but the bonus point was secured with everyone apart from the Neath Athletic squad believing the game was over.

The last 10 minutes saw Neath Athletic take a grip of the game amazingly running in three tries in this time to secure not only one but two bonus points.

The result was more important than the performance with the five points seeing Ystrad return to second place and a promotion spot thanks to Aberavon Quins’ emphatic win over Brynaman.
