A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a 56-year-old Brecon man following an incident of ‘violent disorder’ Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, on Thursday 6 August.

Gwent Police received a report of violent disorder involving a group of men in Mill Street, at around 7.15pm on Thursday 6 August. A 56-year-old man – who can now be named as Anthony “Tony” Jones from Brecon - was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since sadly died. His family are being supported by specialist officers.

In total, seven men – aged 31, 39, 40, 45, 59, 61, and 73 - have been arrested in connection with the disorder. All seven remain in police custody.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley said: “We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our community, but we have officers working around the clock conducting enquiries as part of the investigation.

“We’re trying to establish the movements of those involved both before and after the disorder and are asking motorists who were driving along Hospital Road, Mill Road and the surrounding areas between 6pm and 9pm on Thursday to check their dashcam footage.
