A newly refurbished public toilet block in Llandrindod Wells has been hit by vandalism just months after reopening following a major upgrade.

Llandrindod Wells Town Council said it had already been forced to replace locks and toilet roll dispensers in the disabled toilet at the Station Crescent facility because of vandalism.

The council said it was also dealing with ongoing anti-social behaviour, which was costing local taxpayers money and causing frustration for the local contractors responsible for cleaning the toilets.

In a statement, the council said: "We are appalled to have to report that despite a high standard refurbishment being undertaken by the Town Council on the Station Crescent Toilet Block, it didn't take long for the vandalism and anti-social behaviour to start."

It added that the toilets are cleaned regularly by local contractors but said staff were being met with damage "on a daily basis".

The council said the incidents were believed to be taking place between the after-school period and early evening and claimed youths had been seen running away from the site.

It has reported the vandalism to Dyfed-Powys Police and is urging anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour at the toilets to contact police.

Parents and guardians have also been asked to remind their children of the impact vandalism could have on disabled people who rely on the facilities, as well as the cost of repairs to local taxpayers.

The Station Crescent toilets reopened earlier this year after a full refurbishment, supported by a Visit Wales grant. The project included a new roof and a redesigned layout featuring a Changing Places Unit with a hoist and specialist equipment for people with disabilities and complex medical needs.

Mayor of Llandrindod Wells, Cllr Steve Deeks-D’Silva, said: “It's disgraceful behaviour, the disrespect these vandals have for this town and it's residents is shocking. If this vandalism continues the council may need to discuss the future of the toilets.”

The Town Clerk added: “The Town Council strives to provide services for the community which would no longer exist via the County Council funding, so it is disappointing to see mistreatment of facilities within the town which has a personal and financial impact on the residents who are the Council Tax payers.”

The B&R has contacted Dyfed-Powys Police for comment.
