There have been many positives at Brecon CC this year. The junior section continues to grow under James Davenport, the committee has brought plenty of energy, and the Sunday XI has provided opportunities for players of all ages to enjoy their cricket.

On the pitch, however, things have been sub-optimal. Following an impromptu virtual meeting on Friday evening, Greg Webber made himself available, and Brecon’s 1st XI, who were batting first, were certainly glad he was there to hold a bat.

Webber produced a magnificent century, scoring 104 from 123 balls, while useful contributions from James Davenport (23) and Rich Lovering (41) helped Brecon post a competitive 235/7 against a strong Machen side.

In reply, the hosts were indebted to Saddam, who went on to score an unbeaten 110 after being given an early reprieve following a now-somewhat predictable drop. Bar one big partnership, wickets fell at regular intervals, and the game was always in the balance, going all the way into the final over.

But so has been the case for most of the season; it was close, but no vape, and Brecon came out second with just five balls to spare and two wickets to take.

A damning defeat for Brecon’s survival hopes. The 2nd XI travelled to Caerphilly to play what was technically their home fixture, having been temporarily displaced by caravans visiting for Brecon Jazz.

Facing table-toppers Friends Union CC, Brecon knew they were up against a strong and experienced side. Buff Kenchington answered the call to complete the lineup, and was economical.

Huw Griffiths took two wickets, and Chris Davenport one, but the fielding display was one to remember, so it cannot happen again. Catches were dropped, balls were dived over, and the table toppers racked up 286 for the loss of just three wickets.

In reply, there was a welcome half-century for Dan Bowen, while this season's leading run scorer, Hugh Griffiths, blasted a rapid 45. However, it was not enough to seriously threaten the target, and Brecon fell well short, all out for a palindromic 202.

Nevertheless, it was a respectable effort against a side that looks destined for bigger things and promotion at the end of the season.
