Residents are being asked to help choose a name for a new Welsh-medium all-age school in Builth Wells.

The new school, due to open in September 2027, will bring together primary and secondary Welsh-medium education in mid Powys under plans being delivered by Powys County Council.

Preparations are under way, with the temporary governing body holding its first meeting last week. It is now inviting name suggestions from the public.

The council says proposed names should reflect the area, be distinctive, and represent the wider geographical area the school will serve. Submissions must also include a short explanation of the reasoning behind the suggested name.

Councillor James Gibson-Watt, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our communities to help shape the identity of a new Welsh-medium school that will serve learners for generations to come. The name of a school is incredibly important, it reflects its character, its community and its sense of place.

“We are keen to see a wide range of creative and meaningful suggestions that represent both Builth Wells and the wider area the school will serve. I would encourage everyone with an interest in Welsh-medium education in mid Powys to take part and have their say.”

The school will serve Builth Wells and surrounding areas across mid Powys.

Suggestions can be submitted online or by email, with a deadline of 12pm on Friday, June 19.

Once the submission period closes, the temporary governing body will review all suggestions and agree a preferred name. The final decision will then be ratified by the Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys.

The chosen name is expected to be announced by the end of term, or shortly afterwards.
