Young farmers are being given the chance to sharpen their shearing skills at a discounted rate, thanks to a partnership between British Wool and the CFfl Cymru/Wales Young Farmers Club (YFC).
Now in its eighth consecutive year, the collaboration offers YFC members a 50 per cent discount on British Wool’s machine and blade shearing courses, as well as wool handling training. The move is aimed at supporting young farmers at every stage of their shearing journey, from complete beginners to more experienced participants.
British Wool’s courses, delivered nationwide, cover the core principles of effective and efficient shearing. Over two days for machine or blade training, and one day for wool handling, attendees receive expert guidance on animal welfare, correct use of equipment, and safety in the shearing shed. Courses are small-group, allowing for hands-on learning and personalised feedback.
YFC members can access the discounted training for £115 plus VAT for shearing courses, or £42 plus VAT for wool handling. Non-members can still attend at £230 plus VAT. Registration for the discounted places closes on 30 April 2026.
Lowri Evans, Wales Shearing Regional Lead at British Wool, said: “British Wool and the YFC have worked together for several years across a range of projects, but this incentive is one of the most important to date. Offering YFC members a 50 per cent discount on shearing courses removes a key barrier to training and gives young people the opportunity to develop their skills while they remain active within the organisation.
“Supporting young shearers at this stage is vital for the future of the shearing industry, helping to maintain high standards of animal welfare, skill, and professionalism for years to come.”
