A bold new art exhibition is set to bring a creative fire to Mid Wales this summer, as the inaugural Central Wales Open Art Exhibition, titled “Here Be Dragons“, prepares to open in Llandrindod Wells.
Organised by the group Central Wales Arts Collective – with members all involved in the arts in Mid Wales – the exhibition promises to become an annual showcase of artistic talent, welcoming both emerging and professional artists from Wales and beyond.
The exhibition will be held at the historic and recently refurbished Auto Palace, a stunning venue chosen for its natural light and striking character.
With support from Powys County Council and local arts charity Celf o Gwmpas, “Here Be Dragons” will run from Thursday, July 10 to Sunday, July 27.
The show aims to be inclusive and accessible, with entry categories for children, young people, and adults. Prizes will be awarded in various disciplines including sculpture, landscape, textiles, and portraiture – as well as a special People’s Choice award, chosen by visitors to the exhibition.
Lucy Burden, local artist and member of the Collective has visited local schools to run painting workshops and inspire young people to be creative. Students were also very excited to discuss, with two Collective members, how to prepare and submit their work for the exhibition.
This year’s judging panel includes prominent Welsh artist Meinir Mathias, established artist and educator Andre Stitt, and Ffion Rhys, Visual Arts Manager at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Further members of the selection panel – made up of leading creative professionals – will be announced soon.
Submissions are now open, with a deadline of Friday, May 30. Artists can apply and find more information via www.celfogwmpas.org/herebedragons
