Powys based home care company, Silver Assist, recently took on a 16-mile walk to raise awareness and money for charity Dementia Matters in Powys (DMiP).

11 determined walkers set off on Saturday, June 7, from Llangattock and walked to Brecon Canal Basin.

The walk has currently raised £1,400 for Dementia Matters in Powys, who sadly, like many small charities, have been struggling to secure the funding needed to continue to provide valuable services.

DMiP runs dementia hubs and cafés across the county. These spaces offer vital support to people living with dementia, as well as their loved ones and informal carers. Whether it’s practical information and advice, a safe place to decompress, or simply a friendly face and a cup of tea, Dementia Matters in Powys is a lifeline for many families in the area.

Similarly to Dementia Matters in Powys, Silver Assist cares for people and helps them maintain their independence and quality of life at home. Their support ranges from companionship and a helping hand with daily routines, to assistance with medication or meals.

Silver Assist recognised a growing need in the community for people living with dementia, and their loved ones, to have a safe space, a sense of connection, and access to helpful information, which is where they reached out to Dementia Matters in Powys.

Together, they now run a monthly dementia hub and café in Llangorse, a warm and welcoming place where people can go for support, conversation, and companionship.

Speaking about the 16-mile long walk, a spokesperson for Silver Assist said: “The day went brilliantly. Some of the attendees from the local Dementia Café joined us at the start to wave us off. Others met us halfway to share lunch and cheer us on. In the final stretch, a few more joined in for the last four and then two miles, showing how strong the local support for this cause really is.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and are thrilled to have raised £1,400 so far in support of Dementia Matters in Powys.

“It was an inspiring day filled with teamwork, laughter, and meaningful connection and we’re already looking forward to our next community event. Thank you to everyone who has got involved so far.”

Deborah Gerrard, Chief Officer of Dementia Matters in Powys, said: “Dementia Matters in Powys is incredibly grateful to those who donated to and supported the recent walk, which couldn’t have happened at all without Silver Assist Home Care. They gave their time to organise the walk and complete the 16 miles to raise awareness of dementia and the much-needed funds for our services—particularly the Brecon Meeting Centre, which is one of four meeting centres in Powys.

“We’ve been collaborating with the award-winning Silver Assist Home Care team in recent months to deliver a monthly dementia hub and café in Llangors. All who are in need of dementia information, support, and some great company are very welcome to join us.”
