Powys residents are being encouraged to celebrate Father’s Day with a difference this year by bringing their families along to two special community sporting events in Brecon and the Elan Valley.

Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 21, with both events forming part of the King’s Baton Relay for this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The relay will showcase 22 baton bearers in Brecon and 29 in the Elan Valley, all selected for their sporting achievements, community contribution or ability to overcome adversity.

In the Elan Valley, spectators will see headline athletes Adele Nicoll (bobsleigh and shot put) and Tim Davies (cycling), while in Brecon the event will feature Natalie Powell (judo) and Rob Davies (para table tennis).

Families are being encouraged to line the routes, support the baton bearers and enjoy the celebratory atmosphere.

In Brecon, the relay begins at 9am at Brynich Lock, LD3 7UY, with spectators advised to gather at the canal basin due to limited parking. Viewing will be available from around 10am, with the finish at Theatr Brycheiniog at approximately 10:30am.

The Elan Valley relay begins at 1pm at the top of the first dam, Caban Coch, LD6 5HP, finishing at around 2:30pm.

Councillor Glyn Preston, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said the events offered a chance to bring communities together.

“These events are a fantastic opportunity to bring our communities together while celebrating both local and international sporting success,” he said.

“The fact that they are taking place on Father’s Day makes them even more special, and I would encourage residents to come along with their families and be part of this memorable occasion.”

Councillor Raiff Devlin, Cabinet Member for Customers, Digital and Community Services, said the relays would offer something for all ages.

“We are proud to host such inspiring events here in Powys,” he said.

“With so many baton bearers taking part and world-class athletes attending, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. It’s a brilliant way to celebrate Father’s Day, by spending time together and supporting our communities.”

The relays are being supported by Glandŵr Cymru, Theatr Brycheiniog and Dragonfly Cruises in Brecon, and by Dŵr Cymru and the Elan Valley Visitor Centre in the Elan Valley.

The King’s Commonwealth Baton Relay forms part of a wider UK and Wales programme running from 19–24 June. It will travel through communities across Wales before finishing in Anglesey, with Baton Bearers selected to represent local pride, achievement and resilience.

Each of the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories has a Baton featuring a word forming a message to be read by His Majesty The King at the Opening Ceremony. Wales’s word is COMMUNITY, and its Baton has been designed by Welsh artist Nathan Wyburn.

The Relay will begin in the Vale of Glamorgan, with a launch event at Barry Island, before moving into Cardiff and Newport. From there, the Baton will travel through Monmouthshire, Caerphilly, and Torfaen, before continuing to Port Talbot.

The journey then heads west to Swansea, continuing into Carmarthenshire and reaching Pembrokeshire. Turning north, the Baton will travel through Powys and Ceredigion, before crossing Wales eastward to Wrexham.

The final stretch will see the Baton journey across the top of North Wales, before arriving in Anglesey for the closing celebrations.

Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, CEO of Team Wales, said: “This is my first Games and my first Baton Relay, and it presents a fantastic opportunity to build momentum and generate support for Team Wales ahead of a hugely exciting summer. We have had such a widespread interest from the local authorities to be involved in the Kings Baton Relay, we can’t thank them enough for their support.”

Cathy Williams, Head of Engagement and KBR Lead for Team Wales, added: “It has been inspiring to visit counties, collaborate on events, and witness the genuine passion across the country to be part of Team Wales. We are looking forward to taking the Baton to as many communities as possible, whilst also supporting the Commonwealth’s Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign.”
