A major knitted wartime exhibition featuring 80 handmade scenes depicting life in Britain during the Second World War is coming to Brecon this December.

The Longest Yarn: Britain at War will be hosted at the Royal Welsh Regimental Museum, with support from the 160th (Welsh) Brigade.

The exhibition, created by volunteer knitters from across the UK, has toured the country and been praised by thousands of visitors for its detailed yarn recreations of wartime scenes.

It will arrive in Brecon following shows at venues including Welshpool, Wrexham, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Astley Hall in Chorley, Lancashire.

Dorcas Cresswell, vice chair of the Friends of the Royal Welsh Museum, helped secure the exhibition’s visit to the town.

She said: “It is so exciting to have The Longest Yarn come to our museum - the perfect setting for a display relating to military history.

“We are also grateful to 160th Brigade for supporting us in hosting this wonderful exhibition and we are sure the people of Brecon and surrounding areas will be thrilled to visit it in such historical surroundings.”

The exhibition was created by founder Tansy Forster and follows the success of the group’s first project, The Longest Yarn, which focused on D-Day.

The Britain at War exhibition tells stories from across the wartime period through knitted panels, with each scene based on historical research and personal memories gathered by the volunteer makers.

Organisers say many of the knitters have a personal connection to the stories they have recreated, including relatives who served during the war or links to places affected by the conflict.

Tansy Forster said: “The knitted scenes are informed by guidance from expert historians, but often the knitter has a personal connection with the story they have chosen to portray.

“Sometimes a relative served in WWII, sometimes a place held memories of the war years, which makes this a truly unique, heartfelt and historically important exhibition, made entirely by hand.”
