A historic mill in Talgarth is seeking support to keep its waterwheel turning.

Talgarth Mill has stood beside the River Ennig for over four centuries, and is one of only five working watermills in Wales, and the only working watermill in Bannau Brycheiniog.

But due to rising costs, volunteers at Talgarth Mill are appealing for help to keep this slice of history functioning.

Posting to Facebook, volunteers at Talgarth Mill said: “The directors and management, operation of the wheel and production of flour at Talgarth Mill are run solely by volunteers for the benefit of the community and visitors.

“Running an historic watermill is a constant financial challenge. The waterwheel, machinery, millrace, and historic building all require regular maintenance and repairs. Without ongoing care, this unique part of our heritage cannot continue to operate.

“The time has come for some serious and urgent investment. With this in mind, we are announcing our soon-to-launch Crowdfunding campaign. Every donation, no matter how large or small, will make a real difference. Your support will help ensure that the wheel keeps turning, the stones keep grinding, and the community and visitors alike can continue to experience a living piece of Welsh history.

“This isn’t just about preserving an old building. It’s about protecting a working mill that brings people together, celebrates traditional skills, supports the local economy, and keeps an important chapter of Welsh heritage alive. With your help, Talgarth Mill can continue to inspire visitors, educate future generations, and remain a place where history is not just remembered, but experienced.”

The campaign launches on the 30th September, but donations are already accepted. Several fundraising events will take place in the autumn, including pizza and Driinks Night, a poetry evening, and an Afternoon Tea and Talk with illustrator and printmaker Hannah Firmin.
