One of the major events in the Women’s Institute calendar, the annual Powys Radnor Federation County Show, has been held at Knighton Community Centre, bringing together members from across the area to showcase a wide range of skills and creativity.
The event highlights crafts, cookery, art, photography and floral displays, with entries staged and presented by WI members from across the federation. It also provides an opportunity for friendly but keen competition, with nine awards on offer to participating institutes.
Members are given an hour and 15 minutes to complete their displays before the doors are closed to allow judges to examine each entry in peace. Judges then award marks and place first, second and third positions across each category.
Preparations for the show often take place over several months, with some needlework entries requiring long-term planning and careful attention to detail. Institutes also spend considerable time designing their displays in line with a strict schedule circulated to members well in advance of the competition.
This year’s overall winners were Dolau WI, who collected four awards, followed by Llanyre WI with two, Rhayader WI with two, and Newbridge-on-Wye WI with one. Among Dolau WI’s successes was the Brecon Cup, which secures entry to the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells in July for further competition.
Judges, stewards and guests were treated to a salad lunch provided by the WI catering team, followed by afternoon tea and a raffle.
