Visitors are being invited to experience one of the Elan Valley’s most striking sights this weekend, with a surprise open day at Pen y Garreg Dam.
With wet weather forecast, there is a strong chance the dam will be overflowing, offering a rare opportunity to see the dramatic spectacle up close. The open day will take place on Saturday, January 24, between 1pm and 3pm.

As part of the event, members of the public will be able to venture inside the dam and climb the central tower, an experience not usually available to visitors. The short, self-guided tours allow people to explore at their own pace, walking through the dam before emerging onto the central platform for elevated views across the dam wall and reservoir.
Rangers will be on hand throughout the afternoon to answer questions and explain the engineering behind the dams.
Tickets cost £5 for adults and £1 for under-18s. Places can be booked online in advance, or paid for on the day by cash or card at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre, or by cash at the dam itself.
