A primary school teacher has combined her love of education, storytelling and illustration to create children’s books inspired by the wildlife and landscapes of Wales.
Georgia Wickham, from Talgarth, has published Netty the Nettle and its Welsh-language edition Neti'r Ddanhadlen, telling the story of a little nettle who learns to embrace the qualities that make her different.
The illustrated books aim to encourage children to develop confidence, kindness and a greater appreciation of the natural world around them.
In the story, Netty feels lonely and misunderstood because other plants avoid her. However, when danger threatens the garden, she discovers that the very thing that makes her stand out is also her greatest strength.
Georgia, who works as a primary school teacher as well as being an author and illustrator, said: “I wanted to write a story that would help children understand that being different isn't something to hide.
“As a teacher, I've seen how important it is for children to feel accepted and valued. I also wanted to encourage families to spend more time outdoors and discover just how fascinating our native plants and wildlife can be.”
Every illustration in the books has been hand-drawn by Georgia.
The books have been warmly received by families, schools and independent retailers, and are now stocked by a growing number of shops, museums and visitor attractions.
Georgia has also started hosting storytelling events across the region, where children can hear the story brought to life and meet the author.
Alongside the English edition, Georgia created the Welsh-language version Neti'r Ddanhadlen.
She said: “I hope children finish the story looking at nettles a little differently. Sometimes the things we overlook have the most important role to play.”
The books are available through independent bookshops and selected retailers, as well as major booksellers.
