WORK has started on the new Powys County Council houses in Brecon- the first to be built in Powys in almost 40 years.

A turf cutting ceremony was held at the site, near Maendu Well and north of Heol Y Ffynnon, on Wednesday 12 February with council officials on hand to see the work get underway.

Julian Stedman, chair of the planning committee at The Brecon Beacons National Park, which gave planning permission for the Powys County Council project, said it could provide an example of how affordable homes can be provided in the national park.

“It is a very attractive scheme’ and is providing ‘much needed housing for the community and is an exemplar scheme to use elsewhere in the national park,” said Mr Stedman.

Neath-based Hale Construction is the lead contractor for the build, and housing development project officer of Powys County Council, Simone Hodges, said: “Working with Hale over the last couple of weeks has been a positive process and we have built up a nice relationship with Brecon Beacons National Park as we both have the same goal of affordable housing”.

The properties will range from one, two, three, and four bedrooms and provide low-carbon accommodation at an affordable price to rent.

Head of housing for Powys County Council, which plans to build 250 homes over five years, Nina Davies, has said that ‘this is just the beginning’.

Last week Powys County Council’s planning committee approved plans for 13 new houses, which will be available for social rent, at Kilverts Field in Clyro.
