THE weekend saw Glangrwyney Cricket Club hold their annual awards presentation evening. The event was held at the prestigious Bear Hotel, Crickhowell and the well attended event was treated to excellent food and service in a wonderful setting.

Club Chairman Eddie Harding summarised the season reflecting on what had been a tough season on the field having lost a number of key players this year. This was exaggerated by the unprecedented unavailability of players during the season. The end result of this was the first team being relegated to the second division of the Marches league.

The off field efforts were congratulated with particular thanks to the groundsmanship of Mike Rouse and Rob Richards. Rob also for his work developing club sponsors. Helen Devoy was thanked for her drive and enthusiasm in organising and delivering the first annual CricketFest event at the club.

Eddie also thanked all those involved in preparing teas during the games. This is a vital role which is in no way underestimated. Special thanks went to

Helen Devoy, Bev Hooper, Jenny Morgan, Susan Murphy-Sharp, Ellen Jerrams, Joan Howell, Steff Jones and Sara Jones with bouquets of flowers presented to those present.

The on field performances were rewarded with:

1st Team Batsman of the year - going to Mike Devoy. In 17 Innings Mike made a total of 489 runs with a high score of 89.

1st Team Bowler of the year also went to Mike Devoy. Mike bowled 179.2 overs with 26 maidens taking 27 wickets. Best figures of 4/47.

2nd Team Batsman of the year was James McIlroy. In 8 innings for 2nd Xl James scored a total of 202 runs at an average of 28.6 with a high score of 57.

James also scored 123 runs for 1st team playing a vital role in the often depleted team.

2nd Team Bowler of the year was Ed Hooper.

Ed bowled 59 overs taking 12 wickets with best figures of 4/49.

Young player of the year also went to Ed Hooper.

In addition to his impressive bowling figures he scored 41 runs with the bat and took 2 catches. An impressive first season with the club showing great enthusiasm and growing in confidence game by game.

5 wicket Haul - Jack Hooper received the award for an excellent 5/17 v Luctonians 3rd Xl.

100 runs - Tim Jones received an award for his 112 in the game against Crickhowell. A game where Tim excelled making a runout and taking a catch along with 2 wickets bowling - You couldn’t keep him out of the game!

Ryan Murphy-Sharp was also presented with an award for his century in the President v Chairmans Xl. This was only Ryan’s second game of the season having been deployed to the Falkland Islands in his role in the Royal Air Force for the majority of the season. In his first game back he only managed 98 not out!

The fielding award went to Tim Jones for his 10 fielding catches and 2 run outs.

Club president Jim Devoy brought the evening to a close thanking all involved in the club for their continued efforts. He also paid special thanks to Eddie Harding and Mark Keane for their efforts in developing the junior section of the club this year with club hoodies being presented to both.

Jim reiterated the feelings expressed by Chairman Eddie Harding that it had been a tough season but looked to the positives with the club being in a strong position to come back stronger next year.
