Llandrindod Wells built on their two cup victories of the previous week to come from behind on Saturday afternoon and defeat Penycae 3-1 in Lock Stock Ardal North East on The Broadway.

The result meant that the Spa Men gained revenge for a 4-1 in the reverse fixture at The Roverside only four weeks earlier.

Llandod had gone behind after 20 minutes due to a Zac Davies strike before Tom Durant equalised shortly before half time.

A towering header seven minutes after the restart from Ashley Jones put the hosts ahead for the first time in the match, before Robbie Nicholls scored from close range late on the seal the three points.

The Wrexham-based visitors made a strong start, with their high pressing game causing the hosts some problems.

Penycae fired a couple of early warning signs when Daniel Holland fired a low effort narrowly wide of the near post in the third minute, after the ball was pulled back into his path, before Joshua Mazzarella poked a shot straight at James Baker in the home goal.

The visitors’ early pressure paid dividends after 20 minutes when Zac Davies fired home a loose ball from the edge of the Llandrindod Wells’ penalty area and into the bottom corner of Barker’s net. Penycae came close to doubling their advantage on the half-hour mark when Barker denied Holland from close range before Osian Williams fired an effort over from the edge of the penalty area after the hosts failed to clear the ball from their penalty area.

The Spa Men were handed an opportunity to level the scores three minutes later when referee Mark Farrington deemed that Oliver Hague has illegally halted Robbie Nicholls’ run into towards goal. But the Penycae custodian atoned for his error by keeping out Jack Evans’ effort from the penalty spot.

The Spa Men eventually did draw themselves back into the proceedings and equalised two minutes before the break. Evans saw his effort on goal partially blocked and Tom Durant was on hand to stretch out and loop the ball over the head of a Penycae defender on the far post.

That goal seemed to provide the home team with a massive boost as they headed back to the changing rooms following the half-time whistle.

Home supporters did not have to wait long for their second goal, when Ashley Jones leapt like a salmon in the Wye at a 52nd minute corner to head past Hague from close range.

Penycae looked to respond from the restart as Davies pulled an effort wide of the target following some good initial work by Eric Durnell on the right.

The Radnorshire hosts were looking to take advantage of their superiority in the early stages of the second-half as Robbie Nicholls drove in from the right but was denied by Hague in the 54th minute.

Daniel Hall looked all set to extend the lead for Llandrindod Wells six minutes later but was denied by a decisive challenge from Wickens as he was all set to pull the trigger.

The Radnorshire men eventually doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Hall did well to pull the ball back from the byline and the experienced Robbie Nicholls was on hand to convert from close range

Evans went close to extending the lead four minutes later, when he fizzed a 20 yard drive narrowly wide of Hague’s goal, before Nicholls was found in space in the 89th minute but was unable to control his shot from the edge of the penalty area.

However, Spa manager Gareth Jones will be happy to have secured a valuable three points as his charges push towards the top-half of the league table.
