Radnor Valley are out of the Central Wales Cup after a lacklustre performance led to a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Tregaron.

The Goats, who have enjoyed their share of giant killings in the past, were themselves on the wrong end of a cup upset as Tregaron booked a third round tie at Llandrindod Wells courtesy of Jay Kenney’s strike on 64 minutes.

After an uninspiring first half, Tregaron went ahead when Radnor keeper Otto Jones failed to deal with a harmless looking free-kick from Melfyn Davies to gift substitute Kenney the easiest of chances.

At the other end, Radnor tried to respond with Lewis Morris going close before forcing a fine save from Iestyn Rees Greaves. Sam Sainsbury forced another save out of the keeper with a header and Charlie Beaumont volleyed wide from a Henry Shipley cross.

Radnor had penalty appeals turned down for handball when Isaac Price burst into the box and saw his effort blocked while Joey Price - making his first appearance of the term from the bench - had a chance he would normally put away. But Tregaron defended well with the experienced Cledan Davies marshalling their back four to deny the Goats an equaliser, while Ryan Hurrell was a tireless worker in midfield and keeper Rees Greaves also deserves a mention for those two outstanding saves.

Radnor paid tribute to former player Dale Tomkins with a minute’s silence before the game. Dale, a popular figure in the local game, was also a player and manager with Presteigne St Andrews and was joint top goalscorer in the Mid Wales League (South) in the 1990-91 season.

Kerry also progressed in the cup, ending a five-match losing run with a 2-1 win at Bishops Castle. Fin Bellamore scored the winner after Castle’s Thomas Edwards had cancelled out Michael Humphreys’ opener.
