MATTIE Lewis scored twice as Rhayader Town marked their return to the Spar Mid Wales League first division with a 5-0 home success over Machynlleth.

Three own goals completed the tally as The Red Kites kicked off their campaign in style under new manager, Jason Samuel.

Lewis was twice played in one on one with the ‘keeper to put Town up and an own goal from a Tony Davies cross made it three by the break. Rhayader eased off in the second half but still created and another own goal followed by yet another when Gareth Hughes challenged a defender completed a comfortable opening day success.

Town have boosted their squad with Richie Powell becoming the fourth player to move from Llandrindod Wells. Dane Griffiths has also pledged his future to Rhayader while Johnny Samuel signed following Saturday’s game and will be in the squad for this week’s midweek trip to Berriew.
