Gwernyfed Ladies Hockey Club have celebrated a memorable season after securing promotion and lifting silverware in a dramatic end to the campaign.
The side finished third in their division at the end of the 2024/25 season, a result which gave them a strong platform heading into the new year. However, they were later promoted into Division 4 due to changes in the league structure following the introduction of new teams.
Division 4 proved to be a competitive campaign, with Gwernyfed growing in confidence as the season progressed. Their promotion hopes came down to the final game away in Pembroke, where they needed a win to secure second place. With their opponents fighting to avoid relegation, the pressure was high, but Gwernyfed held their nerve to claim victory and seal promotion.
The success continued in the Plate Final, where Gwernyfed faced Risca 2s on Friday, April 24. In a tightly contested match, Gwernyfed scored from a short corner and produced a determined defensive display to secure the win and lift the trophy.
Captain Sarah Gunning said: “In my first year as captain of Gwernyfed Ladies, I couldn’t be prouder of this team. The commitment, the passion and the spirit have been incredible from everyone.”

Gwernyfed Ladies will now prepare for life in Division 3 next season, with training set to resume in early September (every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm) at Brecon Astro. The club also runs social hockey sessions and welcomes players of all ages and experience levels, which currently ranges from 15 to 64.
“We also run social hockey sessions outside of the season at the same time, so whether you’re experienced or just fancy giving it a go, you’ll be more than welcome,” added Ms Gunning.
“We’d love to welcome some new faces - come and join us.”
