The iconic Dragon’s Back Race is set to introduce two new mountain challenges by 2026, with the picturesque Bannau Brycheiniog forming part of one of the new routes.
Organisers have announced two thrilling new races for 2026 Dragon’s FireTM and Dragon’s TailTM each delivering a high-octane two-day mountain adventure through some of Wales’ most dramatic and iconic terrain.
Set against the same backdrop as the full six-day Dragon’s Back Race taking place 7th - 12th September 2026, these new routes invite more runners to experience the magic, grit, and camaraderie of this unforgettable journey, in a shorter, more accessible format.
“I’m incredibly excited to introduce Dragon’s FireTM and Dragon’s TailTM,” said event director Shane Ohly. “These two new races open the door for more runners to experience the magic of the Dragon’s Back Race® in a more accessible and achievable way.”
Dragon’s Tail | 11–12 September 2026
137km | 4500m+ ascent
Dragon’s Tail offers a spectacular two-day finale, beginning on Day 5 of the full race and capturing its emotional climax. Runners will traverse the wild beauty of Bannau Brycheiniog, widely hailed as the best single day of the course, before a flat-out ultra finish into the heart of Cardiff and a grandstand reception at Cardiff Castle.
“I also hope these races serve as a stepping stone for aspiring Dragons,” said Shane Ohly. “Many runners don’t realise what they’re truly capable of — and I hope these new races will ignite that sense of belief and adventure.”
Dragon’s Fire | 7–8 September 2026
110km | 7300m+ ascent
Dragon’s Fire is a two-day mountain epic that starts at the iconic Conwy Castle, covering the toughest and most technical stages of the full Dragon’s Back Race® including the Carneddau, Glyderau, Snowdon massif and the Rhinogs. It’s an intense introduction to the Dragon’s spirit, with two nights at the event’s legendary overnight camps.
“These aren’t watered-down versions of the main event; they are must-do mountain running challenges,” Shane Ohly, event director added .“Completing either is a significant achievement, and one any runner should be proud of.”
