Powys Teaching Health Board has taken a major step in its digital transformation programme after launching a new electronic Prescribing and Medicines Management system on Llewellyn Ward at Bronllys Hospital.
The rollout introduces the ePMA system and Shared Medicines Record, which the health board says is the first stage of a wider phased digital programme aimed at improving patient safety and efficiency.
Clinicians on the ward say the system is already improving workflows, reducing paperwork and allowing faster access to medication records in real time.
Dr Bingham, who works on the ward, said: “Personally, with the mobile desktop trollies, my ward round became a thing of digital beauty. I could have WNCR, ePMA and WCP all open at the same time, no need to keep walking between the desktop computer, the patient's room, chasing the forever wandering drug card or the patients paper notes.”
Ward manager Michelle Sweet said staff had adapted to the new system after an initial adjustment period, with the biggest improvement being the removal of paper drug charts and easier access to clear information.
She added that support from the training team had helped staff feel more confident during the transition, with visible help across shifts.
Pharmacy technician Holly Jarman said she has already seen “clear benefits” for both staff and patients since ePMA was introduced on her ward. The system has improved communication between pharmacy, nursing and medical teams, and helped reduce delays in accessing medication information.
“Due to the rural nature of Powys, ePMA is valuable in supporting remote working to review medication charts and facilitate discharge,” she said.
“The pharmacy priority list has also improved workflow by helping identify newly admitted patients, medication changes, and those requiring urgent clinical review. This supports safer prescribing, more efficient medicines management, and timely patient care.”
