Three fathers and their sons have clocked up more than 73 years of service between them at Llandrindod Wells Fire Station.

Paul and Connor Treacy, Mark ‘Dom’ and Fin Hughes, and Richard and Brad Phillips all serve as on-call firefighters with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS).

On one occasion, all six family members even responded to an incident together on the same fire engine.

The families are being recognised by the fire service for their commitment to protecting their community.

Crew Manager Paul Treacy has served at Llandrindod Wells for more than 16 years after being encouraged to apply by a colleague.

His son, Firefighter Connor Treacy, joined just over a year ago, having grown up around the fire station and developed an interest in the service from an early age. Connor said seeing his father carry out his duties had given him an insight into the commitment required. Both father and son said one of the most rewarding parts of being an on-call firefighter was the opportunity to serve and protect the communities where they live and work.

Crew Manager Mark ‘Dom’ Hughes is the longest-serving of the three fathers, having dedicated more than 26 years to Llandrindod Wells Fire Station. He initially joined for the challenge, camaraderie and extra income, but went on to make a lasting commitment to the station and its crew.

His son, Firefighter Fin Hughes, followed in his footsteps three years ago. Fin was drawn to the camaraderie of being part of his local fire station and the opportunity to develop new skills. He also joked that the role gave him something interesting to add to his online dating profile.

Firefighter Richard Phillips has served at Llandrindod Wells for more than 24 years. He joined because he wanted a challenging and rewarding role, but said the opportunity to support his local community remained one of the most important parts of the job.

His son, Firefighter Brad Phillips, joined the crew three years ago. Brad has since used the skills and experience gained as an on-call firefighter to progress into a wholetime role with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service at Ebbw Vale Fire Station. He said being a respected member of the community and seeing the relief of people when crews arrived at incidents were among the most rewarding parts of the job.

The family connection extends further, with Richard’s daughter having previously served as a firefighter.

Station Manager Sam Harries said having three father-and-son firefighting families at the station was “very special”.

He added: “It’s a fantastic reflection of the strong community spirit and commitment that exists within our crew.

“The Treacy, Hughes and Phillips families have made an outstanding contribution to the station, and we are incredibly proud of the service they continue to give in supporting their local communities.”

MAWWFRS is currently recruiting on-call firefighters. The roles offer training, teamwork, leadership and problem-solving opportunities, alongside payment through retainer fees and call-out payments.
